These Heritage Bus Rides provide a unique opportunity to experience Sheffield’s architectural and industrial heritage from the top deck of a 1950s Sheffield Corporation bus, with pauses to visit historic buildings that are mostly not easily accessible to individual members of the public.
All three tours are available for group bookings, and A Bus Ride Round Attercliffe is also open to individuals to book on selected Sundays during the summer months.
There are three distinctive tours,–
A Bus Ride Round Attercliffe looks in detail at the past, present and future environment in the Lower Don Valley, once the heartland of the heavy steel industry, an area that has undergone more change in the past two hundred years than any other part of Sheffield. It has obvious appeal to those who remember Attercliffe before the decline of the steelworks in the 1980s, but attracts others who wish to understand the significance of this once vibrant area. This Bus Ride takes three hours.
Sheffield’s Industrial Heritage provides groups of 25-30 with an overview of the history of Sheffield’s industry. It begins with a walking tour of Neepsend and Kelham Island, followed by a Bus Ride into the Lower Don Valley. Lunch and visits are arranged to suit the preferences and budget of each group. The full itinerary of this event takes between five and six hours, including lunch; the Bus Ride alone takes approximately 2½ hours.
Sheffield’s Architectural Heritage provides groups of 25-30 with an insight into the rich variety of buildings in the city centre and the western suburbs. It begins with a walking tour of the city centre, followed by a Bus Ride out to Broomhill, Ranmoor and Norfolk Park. Lunch and visits are arranged to suit the preferences and budget of each group. The full itinerary of this event takes between five and six hours, including lunch; the Bus Ride alone takes approximately 2½ hours.
Each group visit is individually planned in consultation with the group organiser. Out-of-town groups arriving by coach are met at an agreed rendezvous point; groups that can travel to Sheffield by rail are met at Sheffield Railway Station. The itineraries may include journeys on South Yorkshire Supertram and will return the group to the starting point at the end of the day.
