The so-called “Tinsley Towers”, built in 1937-38, were uncomfortably close to the M1 motorway viaduct which opened in 1968. When the power station closed in 1980 the towers were left, and became a much-loved landmark to Sheffield people returning home and travellers driving along the motorway. They were eventually demolished in 2008.
