Description
This Scarborough-based tour explored the history of the seaside from the seventeenth century to the present day, visiting a range of resorts set in the glorious scenery of the Yorkshire coast.
Scarborough can claim to be one of the oldest seaside resorts in Britain. Beginning as a spa-town in the 17th century, it lost some but not of all of its gentility with the arrival of the railways.
It contrasts with Filey and Bridlington, genteel Regency resorts that expanded in the Victorian period, and to the incomplete resort developments at Whitby West Cliff, Saltburn-by-the-Sea and Ravenscar.
Architectural highlights in the itinerary included the spa buildings at Bridlington and Scarborough. Whitby Abbey and St Mary’s Church, Whitby and the exceptional pre-Raphaelite interior of St Martin-on-the-Hill Church, Scarborough, and a visit to the Scarborough Fair Collection, a rich display of fairground rides, showmen’s engines, mechanical organs, cars and motorbikes and two cinema Wurlitzers.
