Great Laxey Wheel, Isle of Man

The Isle of Man is another country – a Crown Dependency with a parliament, Tynwald, dating back over a thousand years, the oldest continuously working legislature in the world.

The island has a fascinating Celtic history and a tradition of sturdy independence from the British mainland. It became a popular offshore resort in Victorian times, and has protected unique monuments of that period – the Great Laxey Wheel, the Gaiety Theatre and Villa Marina Wurlitzer and the working transport systems of steam trains, horse trams and electric trams.

The 2014 tour touched on all the significant aspects of Manx history, including Cregneash Folk Village, Peel Castle, Castle Rushen, the Old House of Keys, making a point of using historic public transport whenever possible, and the itineraries covered all the island’s major towns – Douglas, Castletown, Laxey, Peel, Port Erin, Port St Mary and Ramsey.
